Traditional German clothing is worn throughout the Alps and neighboring regions, including Austria and the high country and mountainous regions of Southern Germany and Northern Italy. While commonly mistaken for German Tracht (traditional national costume), the dirndl and lederhosen are more specifically regional in their popularity.
The dirndl is a traditional dress worn by women of southern Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria and the Italian South Tyrol. It is constructed of a bodice, blouse, full skirt and apron. Despite its simple and plain-looking styling, an authentic modern dirndl can be rather costly due to the tailoring involved and the expensive hand-crafted or silk cloth sometimes used. In the Southern German regions, “dirndl” originally meant “young woman or girl”, and “dirndlkleid” to her dress. In modern times, “dirndl” can be a reference to the young lady or her dress.
Lederhosen are typical of the regions of Western Austria and Northern Italy known as the Tyrol. Lederhosen is the German word for “leather breeches” (singular form being “Lederhose”) that can be short or reach to the knee. The long version of this garment is commonly called “Bundhosen”. Originally worn for physical labor, they were sturdier than cloth breeches and it was easier to clean them. Despite the common misunderstanding that they are traditional German Tracht, they are in modern times popular as working men’s leisure wear.
Has anybody ever wondered why Oktoberfest is celebrated in September by drinking Marzenbier (March beer)? Or would you simply enjoy your wurstl and bretzel, lift your stein for a re-fill and stop questioning the situation?
